WP1
Building up an expert centre (ExCe) for molecular genetics (MGs) of rare diseases (RD) in IMGGE

The objectives of this WP are:
1.1.  Innovation capacity building and creation of strategic Intellectual Property (IP) development plan:
1.1a. Create greater awareness of the importance of protecting IP within the IMGGE
1.1b. Create a development plan for management of the innovative component within the research at IMGGE
1.1c. Training on IP issues (workshops), knowledge protection and commercial exploitation and training on spin-off creation practices
1.1d. Build a long-term, sustainable IP culture and management through structure with clearly defined responsibilities
1.1e. Share the knowledge, practices and materials created through this programme with project partners and other institutions in the region.
1.2. Developing strategic partnership with local clinical centres, hospitals and SME

These objectives will be realized through:
T1a. Develop strategic IP development plan, internal capability, practices and procedures for identifying, protecting and exploiting IP from research. Build internal capability by making provisions for elaboration of a strategic development plan and training the management of IMGGE.
T1b. Develop materials and procedures for use by the IP Agency staff in the IMGGE for training researchers and administrators in IP issues and establishing good procedures for protection and exploitation of IP.
T1c. Conduct training workshops for researchers in IP.
T2a. Continuous work with IMGGE to establish and implement tracking of metrics for monitoring success of IP protection, exploitation and sustainability.
T2b. Share the knowledge, practices and materials created through this programme with project partners.
T3. Building up strategic partnership and network with appropriate local clinical centres, hospitals and SME

WP2
Reinforcement of material resources and implementation of new approaches for IMGGE research progress

The objectives of this WP are:

2.1. Reinforcement of material potential through acquisition and upgrading of equipment
2.2. Implementation of biosafety measures to comply with EU regulations/standards
WP2B
2.3. Improvement of methodological approaches for study of molecular markers in RD
2.4. Reinforcement of computational biology and bioinformatics tools applications at IMGGE
WP2C
2.5.Building up capacities to establish national biobanks for selected RD

These objectives will be realized through:

T4. Acquisition and upgrading of research equipment
T5. Implementation of biosafety measures to comply with EU regulations/standards
WP2B
T6. Implementation of standard protocols to meet EU requirements for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
T7. Standardization and validation of methodologies for characterization of molecular markers relevant in diagnosis and prognosis of RD currently used in IMGGE
T8. Selection of novel molecular genetic methods for study of molecular markers in RD
T9. Standardization and validation of newly introduced MG methods for study of molecular markers in RD
T10. Establishment of databases (Serbian and Balkan human mutation in RD)
T11. Implementation of modern approaches and know-how in characterization of new molecular markers for selected RD
T12. Selection of novel molecular markers to complement genotype-based predictions for RD
T13. Implementation of up-to-date computational biology tools in RD research
WP2C
T14. Setting up basic capacities (SOPs,legal and ethical issues) related to establishment of biobanks
T15. Establishment of molecular genetic databases to complement national patients’ registries for RD
WP3
Reinforcement of human resources

The objectives of this WP are:
3.1. Reinforcement of human potential that can contribute to implementation of new methodologies related to ExCe for MGs of RD
3.2. Reinforcement of the scientific management of the IMGGE

These objectives will be realized through:
T16. Recruitment of experienced researchers
T17. Reinforcement of human resources by hiring experienced technicians
T18. Engagement of experienced research manager 

WP4
Exchange of know-how and experience

The objectives of this WP are:
4.1. Networking with EU institutions and other European and regional groups or networks in order to increase personnel mobility and exchange of know-how and experience
4.2. Intensifying the transfer of knowledge and information of the latest MG approaches for study of RD from distinguished EU centres to IMGGE
4.3. Strengthening training programmes related to newly acquired equipment
4.4. Facilitating knowledge transfer and network building at regional level

These objectives will be realized through:
T19. Training of IMGGE’s research staff in the EU collaborative centres
T20.Participation of 71 IMGGE’s research staff at international and regional conferences/workshops
T21. Visits of 9 distinguished European experts to IMGGE
T22. Technology related training for newly acquired equipment
T23. On-site technology related training
T24. Organisation of conference with regional participation for exchanging of know-how 

WP5
Dissemination and promotion

The objectives of this WP are:
5.1. Increasing the awareness of the researchers, health care practitioners, pharmaceutical industry and legislation representatives regarding ExCe for MGs of RD activities
5.2. Increasing public awareness regarding ExCe for MGs of RD activities through direct measures
5.3. Promotion of local and regional networking with institutions involved in biomedical science for RD
5.4. Increasing visibility of SERBORDISinn / IMGGE at all levels

These objectives will be realized through:
T25. Increase in public awareness on the activities of ExCe for MGs of RD
T25a. Increase in public awareness on the activities of ExCe for MGs of RD through organization of open-days at IMGGE
T25b. Increase in public awareness on the activities of ExCe for MGs of RD through organization of Rare Disease Days

Project management

The objectives of this WP are:
6.1. Implementation of proposed coordination, management and governance structure
6.2. Logistic support for the training activities of different WPs
6.3. Enhancement of the strength of the Project by attracting additional complementary partners
6.4. Development of a sustainability plan
